The Pay The Rent (PTR) scheme acknowledges that all Australians live on Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander land and that land was taken from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples without consent, payment or treaty. The scheme is a way that other Australians can contribute “rent” directly to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led groups and organisations. Paying the rent is an act of restorative justice, of recompense, of taking responsibility and acknowledging benefits accrued through occupying stolen land.
Paying the rent acknowledges that other Australians have benefited from and continue to benefit from, policies and practices that have been part of the colonisation of this nation, particularly from stolen land. We all benefit from the occupation and use of this land. While governments have been very slow to act, individuals can decide to ‘pay the rent’ directly to Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples until such time as the Government fulfils its obligation and begins to ‘pay the rent’ on behalf of those not of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent.
Thank you in advance for considering being a part of the Pay the Rent scheme. You will be supporting Nalderun to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People in and around Castlemaine reach their full potential.

PLEASE NOTE (April 2020). We are exploring a streamlined process for these donations to be tax deductible through Castlemaine Community House. Given the present emergency health situation that we find ourselves in, we have decided to launch without this component. You will be informed when we have sorted out a tax deductibility process.
